Colorado Bar Association: The Colorado Bar Association website has many resources for lawyers, the media. These resources range from the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct to Formal Ethics Opinions of the CBA Ethics Committee to links to ethics websites hosted by other states' courts and bar associations. No endorsement of any particular website or resource is intended. It is strongly recommended that there be independent verification of the accuracy of information obtained from any website.

The Colorado Board of Law Examiners, whose members are appointed by the Colorado Supreme Court, consists of two committees. The Law Committee is responsible for all aspects of the Colorado Bar Examination. The Bar Committee is responsible for determining that applicants for admission are morally, mentally, and ethically fit to practice law, as well as determining eligibility for on-motion admission (admission without examination).

The Colorado Bar Association Ethics Committee is a standing committee of the Colorado Bar Association, staffed by approximately 90 Colorado attorneys, existing for the purpose of giving ethics advice to Colorado attorneys. The Committee will answer written requests for ethics advice subject to certain exceptions such as those listed below. The Committee will issue Formal Ethics Opinions concerning topics of general interest. Also, for more immediate advice, attorneys may call members of the HotLine sub-committee for a brief discussion of ethical issues.

The Ethics Committee is NOT associated with the Colorado Supreme Court, the Presiding Disciplinary Judge, the Attorney Regulation Committee, or the Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel. Committee Opinions, whether informal written opinions or published formal Ethics Opinions, are issued for advisory purposes only and are not in any way binding on the Colorado Supreme Court, the Presiding Disciplinary Judge, the Attorney Regulation Committee, Attorney Regulation Counsel, or the Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel and do not provide protection against disciplinary actions.

Pursuant to its by-laws, the Committee is not obliged to respond to questions:
about completed conduct;
about another attorney's conduct;
about law rather than ethics;
about matters in litigation;
from a non-attorney;
when the inquirer (e.g. caller) will not identify him or herself.

Certain members of the Ethics Committee are available for BRIEF discussion of immediate ethical dilemmas or questions of the attorney calling the HotLine. Attorneys are asked to do their own research prior to calling the HotLine. HotLine inquiries are handled by individual members of the Committee to help identify ethical issues and do not necessarily reflect the thinking of the Committee as a whole. Please remember these practicing attorneys are doing this for free and usually can't spend more than about 10 minutes per call. The HotLine attorneys are not there to do research for you.

Administrative Law Section
Studies the laws and procedures governing state and federal administrative agencies in Colorado. The committee directs its attention in particular to issues of state administrative law, procedure, the improvement of procedure and the improvement of practice before state administrative agencies. In addition, the committee engages in educational activities including topical lunches on subjects of interest to administrative law practitioners, CLE programs, an educational program at the CBA convention, and a quarterly column in The Colorado Lawyer. The committee also reviews pending legislation which affects the jurisdiction and procedures of state agencies. The committee may make recommendations to the Legislative Policy Committee of the CBA or contact interested agencies or individuals to make them aware of pending legislation on the administrative process.

Business Law Section
Provides information and assistance to practitioners in corporate, partnership, commercial and banking law and offers them a means of influencing legislation and working for improvements in the law and the judicial system. Among other things, the section sponsors an ongoing program of monitoring and updating corporate, partnership, securities and other business-oriented laws. Section task forces have been instrumental in revisions to the Colorado Corporation Code, the Colorado Securities Act and the Uniform Commercial Code. The section works with the Colorado Secretary of State and other administrative agencies to secure appropriate services for the public and the bar. It arranges the publication of monthly articles in The Colorado Lawyer, the distribution of bankruptcy decisions, and the preparation of other material helpful to practicing lawyers. Coordinating with Continuing Legal Education of Colorado, Inc., the section designs and presents general and specialized topical luncheons for business lawyers. The subsections are: (l) securities law; (2) financial institutions; (3) business entities; (4) commercial matters; (5) trade regulations and antitrust issues; (6) bankruptcy; (7) corporate counsel; (8) nonprofit; (9) franchise law; and (10) Small Business.
